From the FRI Consensus Group to the FUTURE Consortium

Trauma remains a major global health challenge, with fracture-related complications causing prolonged disability, high healthcare costs, and reduced quality of life. Among the most serious complications are fracture-related infection (FRI) and fracture non-union (FNU).

To address the lack of standardized approaches to FRI, the FRI Consensus Group was founded following the first international consensus meeting in 2016. The group successfully established diagnostic criteria, clinical pathways, and treatment principles, resulting in multiple high-impact publications and global adoption of the FRI definition by organizations such as the European Bone and Joint Infection Society (EBJIS) and the AO Foundation. The initial project concluded in 2023 with the publication of five key articles.

In response to evolving clinical challenges—particularly in the context of global conflict and complex trauma—the scope of this work has expanded. The FUTURE Consortium builds on this foundation to address both FRI and FNU through coordinated research, consensus development, and education.

The consortium is guided by a Steering Committee composed of internationally recognized experts representing major scientific societies and organizations. Operating under the umbrella of EBJIS, the FUTURE Consortium aims to establish widely accepted standards that advance research collaboration and improve patient care worldwide.
