From the FRI Consensus Group to the FUTURE Consortium

Trauma remains a major global health challenge, with fracture-related complications causing prolonged disability, high healthcare costs, and reduced quality of life. Among the most serious complications are fracture-related infection (FRI) and fracture non-union (FNU).

To address the lack of standardized approaches to fracture-related infection (FRI), the FRI Consensus Group was established following the first international consensus meeting in 2016. The group defined diagnostic criteria, clinical pathways, and treatment principles, leading to multiple high-impact publications and widespread global adoption of these guidelines by organizations such as the European Bone and Joint Infection Society (EBJIS), the AO Foundation, and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA). This initial phase concluded in 2023 with the publication of five landmark articles.

In response to evolving clinical challenges—particularly in the context of global conflict and complex trauma—the scope of this work has expanded. The FUTURE Consortium builds on this foundation to address both FRI and FNU through coordinated research, consensus development, and education.

The consortium is guided by a Steering Committee (in formation) composed of internationally recognized experts affiliated with major scientific societies and organizationsOperating under the umbrella of EBJIS, the FUTURE Consortium aims to establish widely accepted standards that advance research collaboration and improve patient care worldwide.
